How Dogs Help Build Self Worth

February 16, 2017 By Brent Pace

If you have ever owned a dog, then you understand that these creatures help us more than we know. The unconditional warmth and affection brought into our lives as dog owners are difficult to quantify, but we are going to try.

How Dogs Help Build Self Worth:

Dogs have a significant impact on our well-being, they have been proven to improve our mental and emotional lives as well as keep us active and healthy.

Dogs contribute to a higher sense of self-worth by making us feel more secure, more loved, and more social. As many as 40% of people involved in a UK study reported making friends easier as a result of being a dog owner. Dogs are known to break the proverbial ice in social situations, giving people a sense of commonality where they may otherwise have only felt awkward or anxious.

In addition to teaching us to be more sociable, our dogs also teach us to be more patient, committed, and generally more selfless human beings.

In short, dogs make us want to be better people.

Self-worth consists of several moving parts, and dogs seem capable of touching on all of them.

Staying fit and active has an enormous effect on our self-worth. Fortunately for dog owners, these four-legged friends and family tend to keep us on the move.

This means that dog owners are getting more fresh air and exercise than non-dog owners, two important factors in strong mental and emotional health.

Moreover, dogs have been directly linked to lowering blood pressure and the risk of heart attack, reducing levels of anxiety and depression, as well as improving social skills.

Studies show the pet owners are generally happier, more contented people. However, it seems that dog owners, especially, report fewer feelings of loneliness and depression, as well as possessing a higher self-esteem.

Perhaps having someone so genuinely thrilled to see you every day has something to do with that.

Just as our dogs do not like to leave us, we do not like to leave our dogs. However, sometimes we have to, such as when we go on vacation, have a work obligation, or whatever else life throw at us.

During those times we want to know that our dog is in good hands.

Bed & Biscuit is an Austin dog boarding, doggy day care, and dog training retreat. Their mission is to provide a clean, safe and comfortable environment for your dog while you are away, whether just during the day or for extended periods.

Bed & Biscuit hosts a knowledgeable and friendly staff who diligently take care of your dog’s needs, and provide safe opportunities for your four-legged friend to socialize, too!

If you are going on vacation, why not give your dog a vacation as well?

In addition to dog training, dog boarding, and doggy day care, Bed & Biscuit also provides doggy day school as well as grooming. A veritable full-service station to ensure your furry family members are taken care of properly.

With as much love and affection as they bestow on us, it is only fair that we give it back in return.
